Why do we need a community initiative to help marriages and families in Knoxville?

Studies clearly show that the health and stability of a community is directly tied to the health and stability of the families within it. Every marker of success for a city is significantly affected by the success of its families. From the education rate to the crime rate, from physical health to mental health, from church growth to economic growth, thriving communities depend on thriving families. How do you operate?

We are not another 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Knoxville has plenty already. We are a “non-organization organization”, meaning we are focused on coordination and collaboration rather than control. Our operational goal is not to build a structure that gains power, but empowers. Think of us as the bugler sounding the charge. Our job is to create a unified assault on all that has been in the way of families finding success in our community. Each person, each organization, each foundation, each church - all have something to bring to that battle. The HomeFront Alliance provides the battle cry, the communication lines, and the aerial support for each of the allies. Now, rather than each of us fighting individual battles as lone units in our own silos, we form a unified alliance with a coordinated plan of attack and victory for our families!

We have a steering committee made up of leaders from the various spheres of influence in our city that determines direction and strategy. To further decentralize control, we have a separate fiscal agent, the Compassion Coalition, who receives funding on our behalf from the philanthropic community.

Sure this sounds good, but is it really possible?

It’s not only possible, but it’s happening in communities all around the country! Two of the people on our steering committee are part of the Marriage CoMission, a national effort to bring this vision to reality in communities around the nation. One of those men, Dr. Jeff Fray, is the chairman of that work. Click here to read about one such story just down the road, in Chattanooga.

How much would it cost to see something like this happen in Knoxville?

MUCH less than what we’re spending right now addressing the devastation! Most of the dollars spent on social programs and ministries, the justice system, and law enforcement go to clean up the mess caused when the family breaks down. It costs significantly less money to go upstream and prevent families from falling apart in the first place. Studies based on other efforts of this type show there is much better return on investment.

Consider this – it takes approximately $1 per person to build a community initiative that proactively protects the family. Now, compare that to the millions of dollars it takes to create and fund the systems and programs necessary to deal with the aftermath of family fragmentation. When does it launch?

In mid-August, there will be a Pastor’s Summit on the Family, during which we will provide the Spiritual Shepherds of the city the opportunity to join together in prayer and unity in spiritual defense of the family. We will then cast the vision for this Alliance and introduce them to our plan to provide them with the resources, training and opportunities to carry out their commitment to strengthen and protect the families of their congregations and across the city.

On October 4, 2010, Dan & Bubba Cathy, CEO and VP of Chick-fil-A, will ride into Knoxville with hundreds of other motorcyclists to provide a citywide rally event at the Civic Coliseum to celebrate the launch of the HomeFront Alliance. They will not only bring a first-rate program, they have also committed to providing matching funds to help double the funding raised locally to help us start strong!

Up to that point, we will be hosting informational meetings with various groups around the community to cast this vision. If you or someone you know might be interested in coming to one of those meetings, please fill out the Count Me In page and enter both you and your friend’s names.
